Honors

  • In 1983, Mr. Goetzberger was the first German to receive the "J. J. Ebers Award" from the American IEEE Electron Devices Society for outstanding technical achievements in the field of electronic components.
  • In 1989, Mr. Goetzberger was awarded the Medal of Merit of the State Baden-Württemberg
  • In 1992 he received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class. 
  • In August 1993, he received the "Achievement through Action Award" from ISES, which recognized the outstanding research achievements of Fraunhofer ISE.
  • In June 1995, he received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University for his scientific contributions to solar energy utilization. 
  • In 1995 he received the Farrington Daniels Award from ISES for his contributions to solar energy science and policy. 
  • In May 1997, he received the Karl W. Boer Medal of Merit for his scientific contributions to solar energy.
  • In June 1997, he was honored with the Alexandre Edmond Becquerel Prize for his "numerous contributions to the science and technology of photovoltaic energy conversion and his major achievements in fluorescent and non-imaging light concentrators". 
  • In September 1997, he received the William R. Cherry Award for his "outstanding contributions to photovoltaic science and technology". He was the first European recipient of this award.
  • He ist the only scientist to have received all four prestigious international solar prizes. 
  • In 2005 he received the "Award for lifetime achievement" of the Rhine Ruhr Int. Materials Conference. 
  • In September 2006, SolarWorld AG presented him with the Einstein Award 2006 for his life's work, his extensive scientific achievements and the founding of Fraunhofer ISE. The award ceremony took place on the 21ts European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition in Dresden. 
  • In December 2006, EUROSOLAR honored him with the European Solar Award. 
  • In 2009, he war honored by the European Patent Office with the European Inventor Award in the "Lifetime Achievement" category for his contributions to the commercial use of photovoltaics, which has thus become a real alternative to fossil fuels.
